Introduction To Tufting
Introduction to Caribou Hair Tufting
Create Your Own Tufted Bolo Tie
Discover the art of caribou hair tufting through a hands-on introduction to this beautiful traditional Dene art form.
In this beginner-friendly, three-hour workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of caribou hair tufting while creating their own floral or berry-inspired bolo tie.
Caribou hair tufting is a traditional decorative technique that uses small bundles of caribou hair, carefully stitched and shaped to create raised, dimensional designs.
Guided step by step, participants will learn how to prepare, stitch, shape, and trim caribou hair to create a floral or berry composition on a hide backing. They will explore colour, texture, and design while developing an understanding of the materials and techniques used in this traditional art form.
Once completed, their tufted design will be incorporated into a bolo tie, transforming their work into a unique, wearable piece of art.
Throughout the workshop, I will share insights into my artistic practice, my connection to traditional Dene arts, and the importance of carrying these skills forward through learning and creative expression.
No previous experience is necessary. This workshop provides a welcoming and encouraging environment for participants to explore their creativity while learning a traditional skill.
